Project 2: Unified Monitoring Infrastructure for Substation Monitoring |
|
Overview |
|
| |
| The utility power substations play a very important role in delivering electricity to consumers by converting high transmission voltage to the lower voltage used in homes and businesses. Since substations are widely distributed and unmanned, remote monitoring is extremely crucial. Substation may need to deploy a Unified Monitoring Infrastructure together with surveillance devices to prevent incidents such as fire or breakage in the substation and constantly monitor for the safety and maintenances of power equipments. |
| |
Technology |
|
| |
| There are many kinds of communication technology which can be used in deploying Unified Monitoring Infrastructure in the power substations. Fiber, broadband PLC (Power Line Communications), and EoC (Ethernet over Coax) are perfect for the broadband communication. Among them, broadband PLC (Power Line Communications) is a technology that allows TCP/IP based data to be transmitted over utility power lines. The technology uses medium wave, short wave and low-band VHF frequencies and operates at speeds up to 200Mbps. PLC technology provides scalable two way data communication over existing power line infrastructure. |
| |
Challenges |
|
| |
| In addition to the consideration in high-bandwidth communication, the needs for cost efficiency, quick deployment and ease of installation are the key factors that affect the success or failure of implementation. |

Solutions |
|
| |
| Billion UMI (Unified Monitoring Infrastructure) solutions can offer cost-effective network deployment for the surveillance devices by using existing power line. Real-time monitoring of power substations can not only save management costs for manpower but also realize complete network automation for the substations. Billion can be easily integrated with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems which are already deployed in power substations to provide visual data about the system’s status. It can help ensure normal operations of power equipment and prevent fire accidents. Billion UMI (Unified Monitoring Infrastructure) solutions can play an important role in monitoring equipment, detecting intruders, physical obstructions, and responding to emergency situations. |
