Project 3: Unified Monitoring Infrastructure for Distribution Automation |
|
Overview |
|
| |
| Distribution automation is one of the critical applications for the utility companies. It can automatically restore and backup the path of power supply if there is an error in the power distribution network. The system allows utility control center to make asset management and condition-based maintenance to their distribution network. |
| |
Technology |
|
| |
| Communication equipments of distribution automation network include fiber optics, radio, satellite, and plc, etc. Among all existing solutions, Power Line Communication (PLC) technology enables data transition over existing power line. It is an alternative economic solution in the rural areas where cellular signal are not easily accessible or lack of telecommunication infrastructure. |
| |
Challenges |
|
| |
| Low-latency and high bandwidth communications have been one of the barriers to overcome for successful deployment. Typically, utility companies will set up their distribution automation system by using fiber-optic communication network. In doing so, it will increase their operating cost for a completed deployment. |

Solutions |
|
| |
Billion UMI condition monitoring system can be deployed to the distribution secondary circuits by using existing power loops in order to reduce the operating cost of fiber-optic deployment.
Benefits of Billion UMI solutions:
- Leverage power line as LAN and existing fiber as WAN communication backbone to perform
equipment monitoring beyond SCADA
- Collect sufficient data to implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), condition-based
maintenance (CBM), performance-based maintenance (PBM), or risk-based maintenance (RBM)
- Derive efficient maintenance program (s) based on the monitored data |
