Project 1: Pre-paid Metering Solutions for Electric Vehicles Charging

Overview
 

In recent years, increasing concerns over global warming, carbon emissions, and fuel shortages are escalating, more and more automakers plan or manufacture to produce electric vehicles. Electric vehicles emit no air pollutants no matter they are operated or idled. Compared with gasoline-powered vehicles, electric vehicles are environmentally friendly and are regarded as alternative commuting tools in the marketplace. As the demands for electric vehicle are obviously seen in the marketplace, the construction of large enough charging stations must to be accelerated so that the dream of mass-market adoption of electric vehicles will come true.

 
Technology
 
Every charging station is equipped with a pre-paid smart meter and a smart card reader. Through Internet, control center can monitor and manage the electric usage of every charging station. When running out of electricity, users can drive at the public parking lot with electric vehicle charging station and insert the pre-paid card into the card reader to start the flow of electricity into their electric vehicle.
 
Challenges
 

Electric vehicle charging will have an influence on the grid. If many users in a given circuit charge their electric vehicles, it should need utilities to upgrade the distribution infrastructure. Utilities may have to manage the timing of charging demand to maximize the utilization of existing distribution resources.

 
Solutions
 

Billion pre-paid metering solutions for electric vehicles charging provide three different kinds of communications: cost-effective wired RS485 solutions, PLC solutions over existing power lines, and easy-deployment wireless ZigBee solutions. Control center can monitor and control the electric usage of each charging station by Billion pre-paid metering solutions. In addition, the pre-paid system will be able to avoid the electricity theft.
