Project 1: Energy Management Solution for Distributed Generation Environment

Overview
 

Countries usually generate most of their electricity in centralized mega power plants and transmit the power via star topology powerline network over long distance. Such architecture has built-in inefficiencies due to power loss over long distance as well as negative environmental impact.

With the global warming trend, carbon emission reduction becomes a global priority. Energy conservation and sustainable development using renewable energy means have gain major emphasis. Advances in technology allow the implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure and distribution automation. This together with government push in the “Feed in Tariff (FIT)” programs made smaller distributed generation projects become an economic reality.

 
Technology
 
Distributed Generation could use a variety of sustainable or recyclable energy means like solar PV, wind power, biomass conversion, waste conversion, micro hydro, etc. Even though they could be reliable energy supply in the long run, these sustainable energy sources usually comes with inherited characteristics like short term unpredictability and fluctuation in energy level which make the real time control, monitoring and tuning very important. DG energy generating units could be clustered and cascaded before tie to the grid, hence also provide economy of scale.
 
Challenges
 

Followings are some of the major challenges which need to be addressed in the DG environment:

  • Power output at a localized level may not be steady or predictable
  • Quality of power needed to be conditioned before feed to the grid
  • Storage of extra energy created may not be easy nor practical, if not managed properly could also damage or shorten the life expectancy of the valuable assets
  • Advanced meter infrastructure with 2 way metering are prerequisite to implement the FIT program, hence derive the economic justification
  • AMI with 2 way communications among different subsystems and operating entities are mandatory for effective control and management, marketing programs and operational effectiveness.
  • 2 way communications among different entities and subsystems could result in vulnerability and cyber-attacks. Hence the cyber security protection has to be considered in any Distributed generation solution design.

 
Solutions
 
The Distributed Generation Energy Management Solution should include a portfolio of intelligent sensors or tools to do the power measurement and power quality monitoring. It should have user friendly alarm and event report, as well as management reports or reporting tools which could provide historical and real time trend analysis. The solution design and architecture should have built-in cyber security protection with layers of defense control.
